On August 15, 2024, we had a lecture and practical workshop on the basics of fitness for all ages of cavaliers at the summer camp in Zbýšov, Bohemia.
In spring 2025 we are preparing the 2nd congress with a foreign speaker - for the first time in the Czech Republic: holistic approaches to musculoskeletal health of dogs - from prevention to recovery with Jana Gams, DVM, CCRP (Dogs4motion d.o.o., Slovenia). Jana Gams, DVM, CCRP, is the founder of Dogs4motion, a canine rehabilitation and sports medicine centre in Slovenia. She is an active competitor in agility and [...]
Muscle repair after physiological damage depends on nuclear migration for cell reconstruction Skeletal muscle contractile function depends on multinucleated muscle cells (myofibrils), which consist of sarcomeres connected by structural proteins. Despite innate muscle strength and flexibility, mechanical strain and stress can cause muscle damage, which is repaired by stem cells (satellite cells). Physical [...]
From the congress "Dogs in Motion" with Prof. Dr. Dr. H. C. Martin S. Fischer we have nine copies of the Proceedings for the price of 500,- CZK/pc. If you are interested, please contact info@akvetmed.cz.
Little is known about the risk of injury in dogs participating in agility competitions. The aim of this study was to identify factors that increase the risk of injury in dogs and to determine the anatomical sites that are most commonly injured. A retrospective study method was used by evaluating information from questionnaires. 1627 dogs were included in the study, 33 % (529 dogs) [...]
Biography Martin Stephan Fischer (*10 July 1954 in Reutlingen) is a German zoologist, evolutionary biologist and movement researcher. Since 1993 Fischer has been professor of zoology and evolutionary biology at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. Fischer studied from 1975 to 1983 in Tübingen with Gerhard Mickoleit, Wolf-Ernst Reif and Dolf-Seilacher and in Paris with Francoise Jouffroy and [...]
The main part of the physiotherapist's work is the musculoskeletal system and everything related to it. But can we look at it correctly? Have we been taught the right way to look at the musculoskeletal system in different schools? On 15-16 June 2024, at the Dogs in Motion Congress with Prof. Dr. H. C. Martin S. Fischer, we had the opportunity to see and [...]
Rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) is one of the most common orthopaedic diseases in veterinary medicine. The anterior cruciate ligament plays a crucial role in the stability and biomechanics of the knee and its malfunction has a serious impact on the quality of life of patients. In dogs, structural weakening of this joint occurs due to progressive degeneration of the ligament. In humans, this injury [...]
Osteoarthritis is a common and debilitating disease of domestic dogs. In addition to pharmaceutical interventions and weight reduction, exercise and physiotherapy are important measures to maintain the patient's mobility and quality of life. The goal of physiotherapy in osteoarthritis is to reduce pain, optimize muscle function and maintain joint function. Physiotherapy plans usually include exercise and physiotherapy in combination with therapeutic modalities, adjustments [...]
Pregnancy is a challenging time for the breeder and the bitch. Inadequate serum progesterone concentrations are often associated with pregnancy loss or premature birth, without evidence to confirm them. In this study, a large number of bitches were monitored during pregnancy, and serum progesterone concentrations were determined to infer what concentration is considered normal. They were [...]
SUMMARY Heart disease is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in dogs. In addition to the investigative methods that are considered the gold standard (echocardiography and electrocardiography), we have the option of using blood cardiac biomarker concentrations when they are not available. In particular, cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and N-terminal pre-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) are investigated. Their concentrations can then be used in the differentiation of respiratory [...]
SUMMARY This article describes the association with plexus brachialis injury in dogs, especially with regard to prognosis. The final prognosis should be pronounced up to 6 weeks after the injury. The possibility of rehabilitation after injury is described. An example of a plexus brachialis injury in a dog is given. Keywords: plexus brachialis injury, dog, prognosis, rehabilitation, physiotherapy
SUMMARY Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disease in dogs. Knowledge of the pathophysiology will allow targeted therapy. Therapy combines pharmacological therapy with rehabilitation therapy, thus in most cases it is multimodal. The Canine OsteoArthritis Staging Tools (COAST) can serve as a guide for the management of patients with osteoarthritis. Keywords: dog, osteoarthritis, rehabilitation
SUMMARY Rehabilitation becomes a part of dog care. In order to perform it properly, we must be able to perform an accurate rehabilitation examination. It includes osteokinematics, arthrokinematics, flexibility and strength testing. Their correct and accurate performance and interpretation help in the diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders and in the development of an accurate rehabilitation plan for the patient. Keywords: [...]
SUMMARY Rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament is the most common orthopaedic disease in dogs. Recently, there has been some talk about anterior cruciate ligament disease. Most breeds are affected. Large and giant breeds are affected at a younger age than small breeds. Diagnosis is made by clinical examination and supported by imaging. The treatment of anterior cruciate ligament rupture is most often surgical, [...]
Summary Degenerative myelopathy is a neurodegenerative disease that affects dogs in adulthood and has been demonstrated in many breeds. Initial spastic paraparesis of the upper motoneuron and general proprioceptive ataxia of the pelvic limbs progresses to flacid tetraparesis of the lower motoneuron. Recently, a mutation in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene has been identified as a risk factor for degenerative myelopathy. This article describes the current knowledge of degenerative myelopathy [...]
Proprioception training is an integral part of most rehabilitation protocols in animal physiotherapy. This is carried out in animals with neurological and orthopaedic diseases, but also in the training of geriatric animals, young animals in their locomotor development and also in canine athletes. The term proprioception is derived from the Latin words proprius, meaning something proper, and capere, meaning [...]
Dogs and cats with various diseases of the musculoskeletal system are frequent patients in our offices. Closely related to the musculoskeletal system is the control system, namely the nervous system, which controls movement and makes it graceful. Nowadays, it is no problem to diagnose and treat diseases of these two systems accurately and successfully. The treatment can be surgical or with the help of drugs. [...]
SUMMARY Small animal rehabilitation focuses on therapy and recovery from orthopaedic and neurological diseases. An individual rehabilitation plan must be developed for each individual patient. Each rehabilitation plan includes movement therapy - kinesiotherapy. The forms of kinesiotherapy are passive kinesiotherapy, assisted kinesiotherapy and active kinesiotherapy. Each exercise in kinesiotherapy has a goal. The main goals of kinesiotherapy [...]
